The opening match of the 21st edition of the Gulf



Arab Football Cup, between host Iraq and Oman, ended in a negative draw at the Al-Basrah International Stadium in southern Iraq. Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani opened the tournament, hosted by the city of Al-Basrah from January 6 to 19, 2023, in the presence of the Swiss FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Al-Sudani said, "Today we open the 25th Gulf Cup on the beloved Al-Basrah pitches, welcoming the Gulf's youth national teams, crowds, and supporters to Iraq." The ceremony was also attended by the heads of football associations from some Arab countries, such as Qatari Football Association President Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Palestinian Football Association President Jibril Rajoub, Bahraini Sheikh Ali bin Khalifa, and other sporting figures from the region.
